We look forward to assisting with your pet's behaviour

Step 1: Book your chosen time from the Online Booking System & complete our Behaviour Questionnaire for your pet.

  • Canine Questionnaire
  • https://form.jotform.com/210090819358861

  • Feline Questionnaire
  • https://form.jotform.com/210557868460867

  • Equine Questionnaire
  • Avian Questionnaire
  • Farm Animal Questionnaire
  • Exotic Animal Questionnaire

We do also like video footage to watch of the behaviour problem so if you can collect this to show us during the behaviour consultation it is always helpful.  For zoom behaviour consultations it is highly recommended.

Step 2: Please take your pet to your regular vet for a physical examination if they haven't had one in the last 6 months. If your pet hasn't had a blood test performed in the last 12 months this would also be recommended to be performed before your behaviour consult with us.

  • Ask your vet to send the medical history across to us at Zen Vet.
  • Email: callie@zenvet.com.au
  • The recommended blood test is a complete blood count, biochemistry and T4 level.
  • Blood tests are strongly recommended before starting any anti-anxiety medications.
  • If any urine elimination issues are involved in the behaviour problem then a Urinalysis is also recommended to be performed.

Step 3: Your Initial Behaviour Assessment Consult

  • We are available for consultations at the Brookfield Showground on Mondays
  • Or we can come to your home to assess the pet's behaviour on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
  • We will review the completed questionnaire and history.
  • Meet your pet and observe and assess behaviour.
  • A physical examination will also be performed if safe and not causing the animal to become aggressive.
  • A medical diagnosis &/or behaviour training problem will be reported.
  • A prescription diet, supplements &/or medications may be required.
  • We will demonstrate how to do behaviour modification training.
  • A management plan will be discussed for the behaviour problem.
  • A schedule will be determined for completing your behaviour training.

Step 4: A Personalised Behaviour Modification Program will be developed for your pet.

  • We will create a behaviour plan to your specific goals & busy lifestyle.
  • You will have the choice of performing the behaviour modification training yourself or hand over the leash to our Zen Vet dog trainer.
  • If you already have a current dog trainer we will send a report to them outlining the behaviour modification training.

Step 5: Revisits are recommended to monitor progress and ensure a good behaviour result.

Behaviour Modification

The animals motivation to perform the behaviour should always be taken into consideration when dealing with a behaviour problem - this is before deciding on ways to manage the behaviour.

Animal Anxiety Facts:

At least 1 in 5 cats & dogs have an anxiety disorder.

What is Anxiety?:

  • Anxiety is not a training problem. Anxiety is out of your pet's conscious control.
  • Clinical anxiety is a medical condition involving anatomical and chemical abnormalities of the brain, nervous and hormonal system.
  • Anxious pets are mentally unwell. They are not naughty or disobedient.
  • Anxious animals are living in an elevated reactive zone and they feel the need to constantly monitor and assess the environment for potential threats.
  • They perceive threats when they are not legitimate ones.
  • They have difficulty relaxing normally.
  • Animals suffering with clinical anxiety often have poor impulse control.
  • The animal has difficulty inhibiting the behaviour because the logical centre of the brain is unable to function while the emotional centre is firing.
  • Anxious animals may have difficulty learning new skills or training due to the interference with the logical processing of information.
  • Clinical anxious animals can have very different behavioural responses from day to day depending on their emotional brain state.

Treatment of Anxiety:

  • Management to prevent exposure to anxiety inducing events, especially in early treatment stage. Each trigger will be different for each animal.
  • Environmental enrichment activities to ensure the animal is engaging in both mentally and physical activities that reduce anxiety. These have to be selected carefully so they don't trigger the anxiety.
  • Medication to normalise neurochemical imbalances - so the animal becomes able to learn effectively & reduce reactivity.
  • Medications may include a short acting and long acting option depending on each unique case.
  • Behaviour modification training appropriate for each individual animal, this needs to be carefully taught using positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Behaviour desensitising training appropriately selected, implemented, managed and reviewed.
  • The behaviour modification and desensitising work should be carefully done using a dog training professional skilled in positive reinforcement techniques.
